Direct flights to Panama are searched frequently. Whether it is for tourism or business reasons, Panama is a country that serves as a connection to many other destinations worldwide. Every day, thousands of passengers arrive at Tocumen International Airport on connecting flights.

During the last Summit of World Leaders, held in the city of Antalya, Turkey, the Director of the Civil Aviation Authority, Alfredo Fonseca Mora, explained that many countries showed interest in signing agreements with Panama airports. Countries such as Austria,

Luxembourg and New Zealand, would be interested in offering direct flights to Panama.

The Austrian authorities are interested in signing a memorandum with Panama to ensure that the leading airline in the country, Austria Airlines, can achieve a codeshare agreement with the German company Lufthansa, which last March established direct flights to Panama.

The director of the Civil Aviation Authority, said that “this doesn’t mean that Austrian Airlines will fly to Panama, but achieving shared with Lufthansa code, travelers from the European nation will have more facilities, such as registration of luggage through flights in German airline”. For Luxembourg, a memorandum of understanding for the freight is negotiated, while New Zealand would be to transport passengers.

It is important to note that depending on the restrictions established by both sides, is set what kind of air ratio will be signed to facilitate transportation.

Nowadays, Panama has endorsed 26 air agreements and maintains 36 air commercial relations with other nations. In addition, six treaties have been signed open skies (Chile, Peru, United States, Guatemala, Curaçao and Nicaragua). Emirates still maintains current intentions to connect Dubai with Panama during 2017.

Direct flights to Panama could soon include Qatar as new air route. This is due to the delay in the inaugural Emirates Airline flight, wich was supposed to take place in February, allowing the possibility that Qatar airlines fill that space open. However, so far nothing is confirmed.

The manager of Tocumen, S.A., Joseph Fidanque III, said that a few days ago, he received a call from Emirates executives reaffirming the interest of the company’s flights to Panama from Dubai. If realized, it would be the longest air route in the world, with a duration of 17 hours and 35 minutes.

The arrival of more airlines, besides facilitate the visit of a greater number of tourists, also represents an injection for the economy. A report made by Oxford Economics, at the request of the International Air Transport Association, concluded that in recent years, the aviation and tourism related services provide an annual average of 5,900 million dollars to the gross domestic product (GDP).
