Panama Bay sanitation project is entering in second stage

Sanitation Bay of Panama, a project that has been going on for about 10 years, is now entering its second stage. The tender for this new phase, will cost approximately U.S.$ 340 million.

The proposed Bay Sanitation, started about 10 years ago, has as main objective the recovery and return to the town of rivers and streams of Panama City who currently pose a risk to public health. This will be achieved by extending collection systems and system construction of wastewater treatment in the City of Panama, in order to minimize risks to health from disease or waterborne transmission.

According to information published by Panama Advisory International Group website, it has announced that the specifications are being prepared and will include the operation and maintenance for 10 years of the existing wastewater treatment plant and a new one will be built as part of the works.

Importantly, the tender for the second stage of the project to clean up the Bay of Panama City includes not only cleaning, but also the expansion of the capacity of the existing treatment plant. To accomplish this, the goal is to build another plant that will operate in parallel with the current one, and is expected to be built in 36 months after the award of the works.

The General Coordinator of the Project, Tatiana de Janon, said that “the work aims to expand the capacity of the treatment plant wastewater for the City of Panama to 5.5 cubic meters per second from its current processes a flow of 2.1 cubic meters per second.” Meanwhile, Health Minister, Francisco Javier Terrientes, explained that “the work” will be the backbone that will support all basic sanitation projects 100 percent, “through which the government plans to provide drinking water to 100% of the population and eliminate all existing latrines. Terrientes said that when basic sanitation wastewater of these houses are completed, will be distributed in different drainage systems have been built and are expected to be built before finally reaching treatment plants.”
